Principal, David Varnish Architects

David Varnish AIA brings over 20 years of post-graduate experience to his firm having participated on a wide variety of Building Types during and after his internship. He has directed, participated on or designed projects ranging from The Wexner Center for the Visual Arts with Trott and Bean/Eisenman Architects where he began his career in Columbus, Ohio to hospital design with the national firm, Karlsberger Companies where he was a Project Designer on Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. After completing the design, he became Project Architect for Pizzuti Development in Columbus and Orlando, Florida overseeing the successful renovation of Sarno Plaza Shopping Center in Melbourne and completing space planning and fit-out packages for new tenants at the office building Sand Lake IV in Orlando.

Mr. Varnish relocated to New York in 1988 spending 3 years with Grad Associates in Newark as a Project Manager being primarily responsible for the new Seton Hall law School, Office tower and Parking Garage Complex designed by Vladimir Arsene, principal of Westfourth Architecture P.C. He also participated on the re-design of St. Michael's Medical Center and interiors for IBM at Franklin Lakes and for New Jersey Natural Gas.

For the next 7 years, Mr. Varnish was a Project Director and Sr. Associate for David Hunter Architects, an interiors firm serving the financial sector in New York. He was primarily responsible for the coordination, design and construction of tenant spaces and trading floors for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter at 1585 Broadway and their other midtown Manhattan sites. Further projects with DHA included consulting for Hines Interests LP and Tishman Speyer both at 750 Seventh Avenue, meeting rooms for AC Nielsen and Sanford Bernstein and a new corporate office for Yorktown Partners at 410 Park Avenue. During this time, various residential projects were designed and executed.

Education

Mr. Varnish holds a Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Architecture both from Ohio State University where he also served as a graduate teaching assistant. David Varnish also maintains an NCARB certificate and is presently licensed in six (6) states, NY, NJ, CT, PA, NH and Ohio. He is active in the New York chapter of the AIA and CORA and is working towards LEED Certification. David has recently attended several summer seminars at Harvard University titled "Rethinking the House", "Residential Design and Practice", "The Authentic House: An Inquiry into the Nature of Home" and "Improving Building Performance".
